The Nature of Mendham Earns 85 Wildlife Habitat Points; Hosts Plant Sale and Garden Tour on 9/16, 10:00 am

Last year Mendham Township launched The Nature of Mendham, a partnership with the National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat, to become healthier, greener, and more wildlife-friendly and by committing to create wildlife habitat throughout its communities, while also educating and engaging residents.  The Nature of Mendham aims to highlight the abundant natural resources within Mendham and its goal is to foster small changes, such as gardening with native plants and eliminating the use of pesticides that are detrimental to our wildlife environments. The purpose of the project is to encourage broad adoption of native plant gardens across our area; creating a thriving natural ecosystem by pooling private yards together, where pollinator insects and bird communities can flourish.  Mendham Borough has joined The Nature of Mendham and we look forward to working together across both towns.

To become certified as a National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat, Mendham Township & Mendham Borough are calling on its residents to certify their own property at nwf.org/certify.  Each homeowner that certifies their property receives 1 habitat point.  The requirement for certification is 175 habitat points. We are almost there! The Mendhams have 85 habitat points, which include 66 individual properties, 2 schools and 3 town properties. One of the town properties is the Wysong Park Native Plant Garden, which was planted last year as a demonstration and contains a range of native plants that bloom from April through October.

On Saturday September 16 from 10:00 am - noon, The Nature of Mendham will host a native plant garden tour and plant sale at 10 Washington Valley Road, Mendham. This property is certified as Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Toadshade Wildflower Farm will be selling a variety of native plants, all propagated and grown in their Frenchtown, New Jersey nursery.
