Mendham Township Pitney Park: Sculpture Project Public Opening, June 29, 6:00 pm

MENDHAM TOWNSHIP – You may have noticed something new has appeared at Pitney Park, and it’s not spring flowers!

Last week, two large stone sculptures were installed at the park’s northwest corner. The pieces entitled “Flying Canoe” and “Oscar” had been on display at the front lawn of Mansion in May, the largest fundraiser to support the Morristown Medical Center. This year's mansion was the 20th mansion and raised $1.5 million to support the expansion and modernization of the Medical Center's Institute of Bioskills Training and Innovation.

When the event closed, the artist, Harry H. Gordon of Lambertville, and Boonton-based gallery owner Scott A. Broadfoot of Broadfoot & Broadfoot offered them for free to display at Pitney Park.

On Thursday, June 29, at 6:00 p.m., the public is invited to meet the artist and gallery owner, along with Township Committee members and officials, to learn more about the community’s first public art exhibit. These sculptures will be on display for one year.

This project was initiated by the newly established Arts Council of the Mendhams with guidance from the Morris County Art Association. The Arts Council of the Mendhams, President Laurie Pettine said, "We are excited to take this first step in bringing public art to our community for enjoyment and education. During the installation, a number of residents stopped to take photos and expressed their approval at seeing art at Pitney Park."
