Creating a Safe and Secure Community

Release Date: August 20, 2010
An open letter from Police Chief Steven Crawford with some basic information and measures that can be taken to ensure the safety and security of our community

Township of Mendham
P.O. BOX 520

Mendham Township Residents;
In light of several recent burglaries and thefts within the Township and in adjoining communities I would like to share some basic information and measures that can be taken to ensure your safety and security. I want to assure the residents of our community that we live in a very safe and protected community but as we all know, every town can be subjected to these types of crimes. The Mendham Township Police Department is committed to providing police coverage to avoid and deter this type of activity but it does happen. With some extra security precautions and neighborhood cooperation we can work together to avoid future acts. The first item I would like to address is that of internet safety and the correlation between social networks and criminal acts. A growing trend that has emerged is that of criminals befriending unknowing victims and obtaining personal information such as addresses, alarms, number of people in households, work habits and more importantly vacation plans. The criminal element has found that this provides them with firsthand knowledge about the residence and once they ascertain when the homeowner is away, the home becomes a potential burglary location. This can be easily avoided by speaking with your children about the need to utilize discretion and not to provide this information via the internet. Secondly we need to remember that your home is only as secure as you make it, meaning if you fail to lock and secure the residence you are inviting problems. A few simple measures that can protect your home are as follows:
*Secure your home by locking all doors and windows
*Utilize alarm systems
*Secure all vehicles in the driveway
*Leave specific lights on timers
*Let your neighbors know that you are away
*Contact the Police Department and have your home checked by patrols while you are away
*Contact the police immediately if you notice a suspicious person or vehicle in the area
In closing, with the above measures and some vigilance we can work together to create a safer and secure community. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our agency and we can either meet with you to address your safety concerns or simply answer them over the phone.
