EVENTS AT SCHIFF NATURE PRESERVE

Come out and explore our trails, take an environmental education class, hold a green-theme birthday party, or send the kids to our popular Summer Nature Program. There's so much to see and enjoy at Schiff that it’s no wonder this is the place where “Wild Things Happen Naturally!” We have 15 miles of marked trails, and protect approximately 768 acres of land in the heart of beautiful Morris County, NJ. Schiff is rich in history, too. From Revolutionary period artifacts to vintage buildings constructed by the Boy Scouts of America during the Depression era, there are still discoveries to be made! Come out and play, hike, explore and support our efforts to protect the natural beauty of our local communities.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Schiff Natural Lands Trust, Inc., is a member-supported, community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving open space, serving as a model of environmental stewardship, providing educational opportunities, and improving the ecological value of natural areas using best management practices. We maintain an active nature center and offer a variety of programs open to the public for environmental education, research and passive recreational activities consistent with the preservation of natural areas.

Summers at Schiff provide kids ages 4-15 a healthy dose of fresh air, active fun, exploration in nature, and the integration of environmental education. At Schiff Summer Nature Program, kids get outside to play, explore and learn together while deepening their sense of community, self-confidence, and an appreciation for the natural world.

June 2, 2018 (Saturday) 6:30-9:00 pm
9th Annual Environmental Film Festival
Schiff Nature Center
339 Pleasant Valley Road, Mendham, 07945

"Schiff's 9th Annual Environmental Film Festival will be on Saturday, June 2nd, at 6:30 pm. It will include one short film, one feature film, and a question and answer period with the feature film guest speaker, Adrian Hyde, the North East Organic Farming (NOFA) Executive Director.

The feature film this year, Sustainable, is written and directed by Matt Wechsler and produced by Annie Speicher. It is a vital investigation into the economic and environmental instability of America's food system, from the agricultural issues we face - soil loss, water depletion, climate change, pesticide use - to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it.
The short independent film, Aiden's Butterflies, is an EEF production by filmmaker, Brad Mays, and producer, Olga Talyn. This sweet and inspiring film introduces us to 11-year-old Aiden Wang, who has been growing milkweed and harboring and releasing Monarch Butterflies since he was 6 years old. We join Aiden in a journey ranging from nature preserves to city streets as he meets new friends and asks us all to help preserve the endangered beautiful monarch butterfly with its dependence on the diminishing supply of milkweed.

The films will be shown at 6:45 pm in Schiff's Woodbadge Lodge, which is transformed into a woodland theater each year for this special event. Festival attendees may choose to walk from the Nature Center at 339 Pleasant Valley Road in Mendham along marked trails to the theatre location, which is a gentle two-mile, or 20-minute, hike or take one of two complementary hay rides leaving from the Nature Center starting at 6 pm and again at 6:30pm. Starting at 6 pm filmgoers are invited to join us for light dinner fare, enjoyed al fresco on our picnic tables. Movie snacks & drinks will also be available at movie time. For those who might like additional conversation and community, coffee, and dessert will be enjoyed by the firepit at the conclusion of the evening.

Films are family friendly, but the content is geared for ages 10 and up. Tickets are $15 each, a family pack of four tickets for $50, with a student's rate of $10. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Tickets are available online at their website.
