Ralston Playground: A Charming Gathering Place

If you’re looking for a location to get together with friends and neighbors while your children play in the sandbox or on the swings, come to Ralston Playground and enjoy its continuing role as a gathering place near Ralston fields.

Earlier this year the playground had to be closed due to the ravages of weather and time on the mostly wooden equipment. Thanks to the Mendham Township Department of Public Works and to Wicklow and Laurano Landscape Contractors, the old equipment was removed, and the playground area graded and covered in playground grade mulch. The DPW installed two swing sets and several picnic tables handmade by the Mendham Boy Scouts Troop 1 and on loan until the new playground equipment can be ordered and installed. (Thank you, Troop 1!)

In the meantime, the gazebo and the sandbox are being refurbished. The sandbox will have fresh sand, and toy construction equipment from the previous playground is lined up and ready to go. The playground is eager to resume its role as a gathering place for parents and children. Come with some toys, a ball to kick around, board games or crafts and enjoy a few hours at Ralston.

As you know, funds are being raised to restore the entire playground with new equipment. The West Morris Junior Women’s Club (WMJWC), the Mendham Township Recreation Commission and many interested residents are involved in the campaign, taking donations for the space, including for inscribed bricks that will extend the walkway from the original playground. Donations can be made on the WMJWC website or at Town Hall. (See details.) All donations through Town Hall or the WMJWC are tax deductible.

Notable in the work that was done by our DPW is the fact that plaques and artwork from the original playground were gently removed and placed in storage for re-installation once the new Ralston Playground is complete – with luck and good weather, by next summer.
